11.2hh 2 yr old Exmoor pony, Devon
Basil ran on Exmoor until he was a year old.
He has never been shod, and has great feet.
He is trimmed regularly, and is sound at all paces, on all surfaces.
He is not ridden yet, of course, but goes out on hacks led from another horse.
Basil’s feet are small, but tough - albeit a bit dirty in this photo!
He has slightly higher heels, proportionately, than the bigger horses - this is normal with smaller feet.
The photo is a bit blurred, but you can see how strong his feet are.
It is just as important to trim youngsters as older horses, as it means their feet will develop correctly.
When Basil is ready for ridden work, he will not need a “transition period”, as his feet are already perfectly healthy.
